Gregory L. Nelson is senior vice president, general counsel and secretary of Ameren, where he is responsible for the legal, federal legislative, security and economic development functions for the corporation. He joined Union Electric Company, now Ameren Missouri, in 1995 as manager of the Tax Department. In 1999, he was promoted to vice president and tax counsel of Ameren Services Company. He later served as vice president, Tax and deputy general counsel.
Nelson was associated with the Washington, D.C. office of the law firm Reid & Priest from 1988 through 1995, where he represented investor-owned electric utilities and the Edison Electric Institute. He served as a trial attorney with the Tax Division of the United States Department of Justice from 1984 through 1988, where he specialized in civil tax litigation. He was an assistant attorney general for the State of Tennessee from 1982 through 1984, focusing primarily on tax and finance issues.
He served as chairman of the Taxation Committee of the Edison Electric Institute, as co-chair of that committee's Tax Analysis and Research Subcommittee and as president of the St. Louis Chapter of Tax Executives Institute.
Nelson received B.A. and J.D. degrees from Vanderbilt University and an LL.M. degree in taxation, with distinction, from Georgetown University. He is a member of the Missouri, District of Columbia and Tennessee bars.
