Department of Energy: Situation Report #8

Edison Electric Institute (EEI) Update
At the peak of the storm, more than 8.2 million customers in 17 states were without power; the most power outages of any hurricane in U.S. history.

Challenges facing utility workers in the devastated areas include:
  • Fallen trees, sand, debris and water on roads.
  • Snow on roads in West Virginia.
  • Seawater in substations, underground networks and subways.

Economic damages are expected to affect some 20% of the U.S. population and total cost of the storm may hit $50 billion, according to IHS Global Insight, a forecasting firm. This estimate falls below the worst storm cost in recent years, Hurricane Katrina, which cost $108 billion.
