In order to reduce the amount of waste generated, Ameren utilizes recycling and reuse of material in all aspects of the business.
Ameren recycles millions of pounds of scrap wire and steel, scrap streetlights and lead-acid batteries we use every year. Ameren also recycles scrap pallets, paper and cardboard and returns large wood cable reels to the original manufacturer for reuse and recycling. Other hardware, insulators, lightning arrestors, switches, clamps, brackets, connectors, wire, pipe, bolts, nuts and washers are all reused.
Ameren is a partner in a voluntary program sponsored by the U.S.Environmental Protection Agency called WasteWise. WasteWise
is a program through which organizations eliminate waste, benefiting their bottom line and the environment.
In December 2010, Ameren launched a single-stream recycling program that allows employees to place aluminum, plastic, cardboard and other commonly used materials into a single recycling container. Through this program, employees are diverting an average of 120 tons of material from landfills each month.
