Deposits

Utility deposits are sometimes required to insure against losses that result from unpaid or underpaid bills. A security deposit can be required during the connect process for a number of reasons, such as:

  • You do not provide your social security number
  • Your credit score reflects a poor history of utility payment
  • You have not had Ameren service for five years and your credit score does not meet the standard
  • You have an account that has been placed with one of our collection agencies
  • You have a bankruptcy that has been discharged

It will be included on your first energy statement along with your other charges.

If needed, you may choose one of the two following options:

  • divide the deposit amount into three installments during the period April 1 through October 31
  • divide the deposit amount into five installments during the period November 1 through March 31

After 12 consecutive months with a good pay record, the deposit with interest is applied to your account.

If you close your account before 12 months have passed, the deposit with interest will be applied to your final bill. Please note that we have the right to use the security deposit to off-set any other unpaid amount that you owe.

The deposit calculation is twice the monthly bill annual average. In cases of bankruptcy or meter tampering, it is twice the highest annual bill.
